The minister in charge would inaugurate the Elephant journey at 11.30 am on Aug 13.

All preparations have been made for receiving the first batch of Dasara elephants in the city on Aug. 13.
Cultural programmes such as tribal dance and Tibetan dance that would make the programme more attractive. It was also decided to erect decorated welcome arches and flag masts enroute so as to give a colorful touch to the programme.

'BALARAMA' GIVEN STRONG TRAINING

Elephant Balarama, which is designated to carry the howdah for the ninth consecutive time this year, is being taken special care of at the Matthigodu Elephant Camp in Nagarhole National Sanctuary.

Last year, elephants Bharatha, Srirama, Gajendra, Arjuna were with Balarama. But this time, they are being taken care of in different camps.

Balarama's partner Abhimanyu is being trained at Moorkal Elephant camp, while Arjuna in Balle camp, Gajendra, Srirama in K.Gudi camp, Varalakshmi, Sarala, Kavita, Mary in Sunkadakatte camp and Vikrama, Vijaya in Dubare camp.

Although Balarama is sent to the forests for grazing, it will be continuously watched by mahout Sannappa and kavadi Thimma. The elephant will be brought back to the camp later in the evening and it will be seen to it that it does not enter into a fight with other wild elephants.

Bharatha has no luck

It seems that elephant Bharatha, who has often displayed his ruggedness in the camp, has no luck to participate in this year's Dasara too. To add to this, his mahout Giriya passed away recently after suffering from illness.

Also, Bharatha and Balarama are fierce rivals and Bharatha always expresses the tendency to pick up a quarrel with other elephants. On many occasions, Bharatha has failed to return to camp in the night, thus causing headache to its mahout.

Gajapayana, the journey of the jumbos participating in Dasara festival, got off to a colourful start at Veeranahosahalli, 20 km from here in Nagarahole Forest Range today.

The first batch of five elephants — Balarama, Abhimanyu, Arjuna, Varalakshmi and Sarala — were seen off ceremoniously with traditional gaiety.

The stretch of the road from Hunsur to Veeranahosahalli was decked with welcome arches with floral decorations and flag poles. Huge rangolis were drawn before the line-up of elephants.

Balarama, aged 51 years, has been participating in Dasara for the last 14 years carrying the golden howdah ten times. Arjuna, 49, has carried the howdah once.

Abhimanyu, 43, participating for the last 11 years, draws the vehicle carrying Palace Music Troupe.

Varalakshmi, 54, has been in Dasara for 6 years and Sarala, the oldest of the lot at 67 years, has been participating for 10 years in Dasara.

The elephants will be brought by separate trucks to Mysore.

They will be accorded a ceremonial welcome in Mysore Palace premises in the morning on Aug. 15.
